Why should you change your engine oil?

Engine oil should be changed before additive depletion and oil contamination can begin to affect engine performance and life. Water vapour, unburnt petrol and gases from the engine's combustion process all end up in your oil decreasing the effectiveness of the oil.

Take the case of a customer who came in for an oil change and when the sump plug was removed the oil was so contaminated it would not drain out of the sump. This case of extreme contamination will cause severe engine wear with the end result being mechanical engine failure.

How often should I change the oil?

We generally recommend that you change the oil every 5000kms or 6 months, In the case of vehicles covered by new car warranty, service requirements will be set out in your new car warranty book There are some situations where more frequent oil changes are required :

• Frequent short runs
• Continual driving in heavy traffic
• High speed driving in temperatures above 32 degrees
• Driving in dusty, sandy or salty conditions.
• Towing

It's only after 20km that the engine and oil get hot enough to vaporise any contaminants; this is why a car that is mainly used on long trips actually gives its oil an easier time.
